How to Save Gas This Summer
Summer is a great time for driving; the roads are clear, the weather is warm, and there’s plenty of cabin weekends and weddings to attend. With all this driving, though, you may be wondering what you can do to get the best gas mileage possible. Here at Glenbrook Chrysler Dodge Jeep®, we’re here to help.
Follow our fuel-saving tips to get the most out of your summer driving and limit trips to the gas station.
One of the best methods for conserving fuel is to make fewer trips throughout the day. When you drive a car that’s been idle for a few hours, your engine is cold and needs more fuel to heat up. To prevent extra fuel consumption, plan to accomplish as many errands as possible in one trip. By making fewer sporadic trips throughout the day, you can save some gas.
Keep your windows closed when driving at high speeds or on the highway, as well as remove any roof racks when not in use. Open windows and extra gear on your car creates more drag, which causes your engine to work harder to maintain speed. Additionally, while the air conditioner is excellent during the summer months, it too eats up gas, so limit your AC use as much as possible.
Avoid accelerating too quickly and pushing down too far on the accelerator. Your car gets the best gas mileage when traveling at a constant speed. Quick accelerations and too much pressure on the accelerator result in your vehicle working harder to get up to speed quickly. Excessive braking and improper tire pressure add to your fuel consumption. Try to coast toward stops rather than accelerating and braking quickly. Also be sure to check your tire pressure regularly to get optimal gas mileage.
