The Basics of Auto Insurance

March 12th, 2018 by

If you are new to car ownership, one aspect you’ll have to
contend with is auto insurance. As your Jeep® dealers here at Glenbrook Dodge Chrysler Jeep near Warsaw, IN, we’d like to help you understand some of the basics.

As is the basic concept of all insurance, auto insurance is a preemptive measure to fortify yourself against the financial repercussions of a potential accident. And while being prudent is a good idea in and of itself, unless you live in New Hampshire, it’s also the law to have at least some auto insurance.

We say ‘some’ because auto insurance is not just one thing, it is comprised of many coverages. The list is quite long, but the coverages you should focus on are Liability, Collision, and Comprehensive.

Liability is the one most often required by law, as it ensures that you can contribute to the damages you cause to others. Collision and comprehensive, while not legally required, are of benefit to you. Collision covers damage to your car in the event of an auto accident, while comprehensive covers damage done to your car by pretty much everything else.

The car you choose will also greatly affect how much your premium ends up being. A new car like the 2018 Jeep Wrangler will get you a higher premium because it is worth more than an older car. That said, there are also calculations that go into forming your premium that you can’t immediately control, such as credit score and driving history.

This explanation barely cracks the surface of all there is to know about car insurance. If you ever need more information on the subject, feel free to contact us here at Glenbrook Dodge Chrysler Jeep, or better yet, come in and see us in person. We are here for all your automotive
needs.
