What Do Your Dashboard Lights Mean?

As the weather starts to turn here in the Fort Wayne and Auburn, IN areas, we at Glenbrook Chrysler Dodge Jeep® thought it would be a great time to help drivers ensure you’re prepared for anything you might encounter in the coming months. That’s why we’re giving you a quick breakdown of your vehicle’s warning lights.

Most of us know what some of the common dashboard lights mean, but unless you’ve studied your owner’s manual, there are probably some lights that may be unfamiliar to you. Whether you’re driving a 2019 RAM 1500 or a 2019 Jeep Cherokee near Auburn, there are a few tricks that can help you identify the seriousness of a warning light and what it generally indicates.

Not all lights mean trouble; many indicate specific settings or alerts and are grouped by colors. Green, blue, or white lights are informational and don’t require attention. An example of this light includes the parking sensor light, which is shown as a “P” transmitting a signal to a traffic cone. When this light is on, it indicates the parking sensors are in operation. Other common symbols include your headlamp lights and what direction or how bright they are, shown by a light preceded by horizontal lines indicating the direction.

Yellow or amber colored lights are advisory lights and don’t always require action but should be paid attention to. Common symbols include a circle surrounded by a parenthesis with lettering or an icon in the center, denoting braking issues. Another is the tire pressure light, shown by a bloated tire with an exclamation mark. If you see brake lights appear, it’s advised that you bring in your vehicle to our Fort Wayne, IN service center as soon as possible.

Red lights are the most severe and serve as warning lights. If you see a red light, showing anything related to temperature, your battery, engine, or brakes, stop driving immediately and consult your owner’s manual for instructions on next steps.
