What Are the Jeep 4xe Drive Modes?

Find Out Below!

Jeep introduced the 4xe powertrain to the Wrangler lineup in 2021, marking the brand's first venture into the electric SUV segment. Now, Jeep has given the Grand Cherokee lineup the availability of 4xe power with plans of offering the powertrain to each vehicle in the lineup in the coming years. Like most plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, all Jeep 4xe models come with a set of drive modes that allow the driver to be in control of the vehicle's fuel and battery usage. Here at Glenbrook Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, we aim to provide our customers with the knowledge that they need to be well-versed in the brands that we sell. What is a Jeep 4xe?

As you may already know, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, or PHEV, is essentially a cross between a hybrid electric vehicle and an all-electric vehicle. It meshes gas and electric power like a hybrid, while the battery is recharged by an external power source like an all-electric vehicle. All PHEVs have a similar setup: an internal combustion, at least one electric motor, and a rechargeable battery pack. Specific to Jeep 4xe models, this setup includes a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine, an engine-mounted electric motor, a transmission-mounted electric motor, and a 400-volt lithium-ion battery pack. This gives both Jeep models an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque while simultaneously boosting fuel economy and driving range. To maximize the performance and efficiency of a Jeep 4xe, the vehicles come with Jeep's innovative E-Selec drive modes. Continue reading below to learn more about E-Selec!

What is the First Jeep E-Selec Drive Mode?

The first of Jeep's E-Selec drive modes is Electric, which allows a Jeep 4xe to run with nearly zero tailpipe emissions. When you press the Electric E-Selec button, the system disengages the turbocharged engine, relying solely on the electric motors and battery pack to power the wheels. Not only does this save fuel, but it also provides instantaneous torque when the gas pedal is pressed. This makes it easier to merge onto the highway and take your Jeep 4xe off-roading because the wheels can overcome rugged terrain without waiting for RPMs to build up before the wheels turn. In fact, both of Jeep's current 4xe models conquered the Rubicon Trail in Electric mode with enough power remaining to reach a charging station. On a fully charged battery, the Grand Cherokee 4xe gets up to 21 miles in Electric mode, while the Wrangler 4xe can be driven up to 21 miles.

What is Jeep 4xe E-Save Mode?

One of the many reasons drivers choose a plug-in hybrid is that even when the battery is depleted, you can keep on driving thanks to the internal combustion engine. In E-Save mode, the Jeep 4xe vehicle runs solely on gas power, saving the battery power for a later time and recharging the battery through regenerative braking. Regenerative braking is the process that electric vehicles use to recharge the battery while driving by reversing the direction of the electric motors. When coasting or decelerating, the electric motors will reverse direction, sending electricity back to the battery pack to increase or maintain its state of charge. Meanwhile, you can use Jeep's Max Regen feature while in E-Save mode. This harnesses more power by taking the kinetic energy from the friction created by braking, translating it into electricity, and sending it back to the battery pack.

What Are the Benefits of Hybrid Mode?

Unless one of the aforementioned drive modes is selected, the Jeep 4xe system defaults to Hybrid mode. As you may have guessed, Hybrid mode is a blend of gas and electric power. This delivers optimal performance with instantaneous torque followed by impressive horsepower. The electric motors instantaneously send power to the wheels to eliminate the wait between when the gas pedal is pressed and when the wheels move. When additional power is being requested, the turbocharged engine will kick on to supply it. When coasting or decelerating, the turbocharged engine will be disabled, allowing the electric motors to take full control. When running in Hybrid mode, the Grand Cherokee 4xe achieves a maximum driving range of up to 470 miles on a full charge and full tank of gas, while the Wrangler 4xe can be driven up to 370 miles.
